West Indies stars Darren Sammy and Chris Gayle have come to the defence of Steve Smith following his ban for ball tampering.Sammy is set to captain the former Aussie skipper in the Global T20 Canada on Friday (AEST) with the pair turning out for the Toronto Nationals, and asked the media to move on from the scandal.Smith once again returned to the forefront of the news cycle in Australia following a photo of him drinking alone at New York pub began to circulate earlier in the week.At a media opportunity prior to the commencement of the Global T20 Canada, Sammy said it wasn’t right to
“keep kicking a man when he’s down”.“As a Christian, you commit sins, there are punishments for your sins. [It] doesn’t mean everything is okay, but there’s always forgiveness after you’ve committed your sins and paid the price, and you move on,” Sammy told reporters.“Like we said, they’ve done that. They’ve missed out on IPL, they’ve been sacked and all that stuff, but at the end of the day life goes on.“I think, as sportsmen, we want to do the right things, set the example for the next generation. We will make mistakes, but it doesn’t mean you’ve got to keep kicking a man when he’s down.
